KERNEL

The Student Society of the School of Data Science

KERNEL has been envisioned as a platform for nurturing a research-oriented mindset and fostering a vibrant learning and research culture among students. It aims to bring students together through shared interests in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, scientific research, and emerging technologies.

KERNEL is intended to be a student-led space where ideas can grow through discussion, peer learning, collaborative projects, and engagement with the wider research community. It can help students discover new areas of interest, share their work, learn practical skills, and connect with faculty and fellow students across disciplines. Through talks, workshops, reading groups, and other academic and community activities, KERNEL aims to encourage curiosity, initiative, and a lasting culture of collaboration within the School of Data Science.

The society welcomes students with different backgrounds and levels of experience. Whether exploring a new topic, developing a project, or exchanging perspectives on an emerging idea, members can contribute to a supportive environment that values openness, creativity, and shared learning. KERNEL aspires to make these interactions a regular part of student life and to create opportunities for students to learn from one another while engaging with the School’s research activities.

Inauguration of KERNEL | 11 September 2026

The School of Data Science, IISER Thiruvananthapuram, officially inaugurated its student society, KERNEL, on 11 September 2026 at 4:00 PM in LHC Venus. The event marked the beginning of an exciting journey centred on learning, collaboration, research, and innovation.

The inauguration marked a new chapter for the student community of the School of Data Science. The School looks forward to building a strong student research community and creating opportunities to learn, connect, collaborate, and explore.

Programme Highlights

The programme brought together faculty perspectives on the role of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science in scientific research, alongside a hands-on Git and GitHub workshop introducing students to tools for collaborative software development and research. The occasion also featured the unveiling of the inaugural School of Data Science Newsletter.
